Cardiac Rehabilitation Centre
The Cardiac Rehabilitation Centre is located on Johnson 1 of our Hotel Dieu site at 166 Brock Street.
The Cardiac Rehabilitation Centre works to improve the health and fitness of patients with heart disease, people who have had heart surgery and those who are at higher risk for getting heart disease. This centre helps patients, clients, and their family members achieve a heart healthy lifestyle.
Some of the services the program will provide you with are:
- Tools to help manage weight, cholesterol level and blood pressure
- Exercise instruction to help increase fitness, strength and energy
- Skills to manage stress and anxiety
- Resources to decrease risk factors of heart disease
- Education about heart healthy eating patterns
- Information on how to make healthy life choices in the community

In order to achieve the most benefit from the Cardiac Rehabilitation Centre (CRC), you are asked to participate in all aspects of the program:
Intake: stress test and blood work to measure client’s current exercise needs. Meet with physician, nurse and physiotherapist to create personal exercise plan.
Exercise sessions: group classes led by health care professionals and designed to meet the needs of each person; these are held twice a week at the CRC.
Education classes: on topics such as nutrition, exercise, stress and medication; please see the schedule for dates and times (add link to schedule).
Individual counselling: private meetings with the dietitian or social worker for more information on healthy living upon request.
Discharge: a repeat of the stress test and blood work will be done to complete a pre and post program evaluation.
What to expect at your first exercise session
- Please arrive 30 minutes prior to your first session and sign in with the receptionist.
- A tour of the exercise equipment and change rooms will be given.
- You will be shown how to use the equipment in the CRC.
- The nurse will review your chart with you and ask about any changes in your medications or health.
- After you have been sitting for at least 5 minutes, your resting heart rate and blood pressure will be taken.
- You will recieve a personal exercise program.
- You will participate in a group warm-up routine.
- During the class you will rotate between different aerobic activities, i.e., walking, cycling and rowing.
- While on the exercise machines, your heart rate, blood pressure and a measure of how hard you have exercised will be monitored often.
- You will be shown how to stretch and cool down.
- Before leaving, your heart rate, blood pressure and a measure of how hard you have exercised will be checked a final time.
Preparing for your regular class
- Eat a snack or light meal before coming to class.
- Do not have a full meal within one hour of exercise.
- Avoid drinks with caffeine 2 hours before class (coffee, tea, some soft drinks).
- Avoid alcohol 4 hours before class.
- If you smoke, please do not smoke at least an hour before class.
- Clients with diabetes should follow their regular diet and medication schedule.
- Before starting each exercise session let the nurse know about any change in your medications, an upcoming visit to the doctor, new or increased symptoms of fatigue, dizziness, shortness of breath, chest pain, irregular heart beats or muscle or joint pain.
What to bring to regular class
- Comfortable exercise clothes including a short-sleeved shirt, shorts or light track pants and indoor running shoes.
- A labelled water bottle (at least 500 mL).
- Updates on any changes in the medications you are taking.

The Cardiac Rehabilitation Centre (CRC) education sessions give clients information on heart health and healthy living. The sessions are held in the Johnson 1 Auditorium and led by members of the CRC team.
To get the most benefit from the CRC program, it is important to attend each session. Participants may start coming to sessions at any time, as the schedule repeats throughout the year. Also, new clients should make use of the sessions while waiting for their start date. Handouts will be provided and clients may ask any questions they have. Friends and family are welcome to attend.

You & Your Medications
This session covers common medications prescribed to clients of the CRC as well as selected over-the-counter medications and herbal products. The pharmacist will explain what they are used for and things to watch for while taking them. Feel free to bring your pills, and any questions you may have.
The Heart: Plumbing and Electrical
Come and learn about the heart and blood vessels. This session describes the normal functioning of the heart, what can go wrong, and how the body responds to heart disease.
Stress Education Sessions
Stress 1: The Good, The Bad & The Ugly
Stress is a normal part of life. This session teaches you how to recognize stress and its effects on your health. You will learn the difference between daily, acute and chronic stress and your body’s responses to them. Learn what triggers your stress and the importance of lifestyle factors such as sleep.
Stress 2: Inspiration for Change
In this session motivation and inspiration for creating change and strategies for stress reduction are discussed. You will learn about goal setting and possible challenges you may face in the process. Community resources such as urban poling are also introduced.
Stress 3: Breathing – AHHHHH
Come and learn about how to reduce stress using guided imagery, relaxation and exercise. You will be led through deep breathing activities and learn ways to cope with daily challenges.
Fat-Friend or Foe?
In this session the different types of fat and the effects they have on health are discussed. Learn about cholesterol and how you can improve your risk for heart disease with proper diet and lifestyle. Body weight, composition, and weight loss will also be discussed along with tools to achieve your ‘Best Weight’.
Making Sense of Sugar
Sugar? Sweeteners? Carbs? What are they and how do they impact heart health and body weight? Learn about which types of carbohydrates are best for activity, reducing your risk for diabetes, or managing current diabetes. We also discuss the current guidelines for alcohol, added sugars, and fibre intake.
Salt & the Fine Art of Label Reading
Explore what salt is, its effect on blood pressure, and where it is hidden in food. Learn about label reading and simple switches in your diet to reduce salt. We will examine what drives our appetite, the risk for over eating and tips to maintain your healthy eating goals.
This first session explains the difference between activity and exercise. The risks and benefits of exercise will be examined. You will also learn to develop your own personal fitness plan using the FITT Principle.
The second exercise sessions provides information on how to measure physical activity and the importance of rest. Important factors for exercising are discussed such as dressing for the weather, staying hydrated, and getting enough sleep
If you are coming to the Cardiac Rehabilitation Centre , please remember to bring the following:
- Your appointment slip which includes the time and date of your appointment
- Your Health Card, also known as your OHIP card
- A complete and up-to-date list of your current medications provided to you by your pharmacist, or all of the medications you are currently taking, in their original drugstore container. This includes insulin, inhalers, any prescribed creams or eye drops as well as any non-prescription medications or supplements such as herbals and vitamins
You are also welcome to bring a family member or friend for support or personal assistance and they are welcome to attend your clinic visit with you if you wish. You may also bring a snack in case your clinic appointment is delayed or runs late
