The hospital body that champions patient and family-centred care is gearing up to honour a physician who exemplifies that approach to patient care every single day.

For the next three weeks the Kingston Health Sciences Centre Patient & Family Advisory Council will be seeking nominations for its Exceptional Healer:  Patient and Family-Centred Care Physician Excellence Award.  The award acknowledges a KHSC physician whose clinical practice is defined by the concepts at the core of Patient & Family Centred-Care:  dignity and respect, information sharing, participation and collaboration.

Originally launched at the HDH site, the award now encompasses both KHSC hospital sites, says Patient Experience Advisor Sue Bedell, coordinator of the award project.

“We’re delighted that this award has now spread to the KGH site, where the model of patient- and family-centred care has achieved such prominence,” she says.

“We know that health care providers at both hospital sites are working hard to partner with patients and families to ensure they have a say in their care and decision-making.  This award is a way of formally applauding those hospital physicians who create an excellent patient care experience over and above the norm.”

Patients and family members can nominate a KHSC physician as long as he or she has provided them with care in the last two years.  KHSC staff can also nominate physicians.  Key nomination criteria include:

  • personal qualities such as approachability and empathy
  • the use of innovative methods to deliver compassionate care
  • a pattern of respecting patient and family perspectives
  • the ability to honour the uniqueness of patients and families by incorporating their knowledge, values, beliefs and cultural backgrounds into the planning and delivery of care.

The nominator(s) must complete a brief nomination form, which includes both questions and a short explanation of the candidate’s special qualifications for the award based on the criteria listed above.  The form can be completed and submitted online.

As well, hard copies and drop-off boxes will be available in Fraser Armstrong, renal and Cancer Centre clinics at the KGH site and in outpatient clinics at the HDH site.  Watch for KHSC Patient Experience Advisors blitzing clinic waiting rooms over the coming weeks to help promote the award and to distribute nomination forms.

The nomination deadline is Friday, November 3, 2017.
