People of KHSC: Akshaya Arun

Her smile is one of the first new employees with Kingston Health Sciences Centre (KHSC) are greeted with, virtually.

As the facilitator of new employee welcome, part of Akshaya Arun’s job is to make sure new hires are set up for success.

“No pressure!” she laughs. “Jokes apart, starting a new job is exciting for several reasons. I try to create an atmosphere where people feel engaged, building on stories about KHSC’s culture and values. I want them to feel welcomed and provide the necessary information required for them to start their roles with ease.”

That’s because she knows exactly what it feels like to be in their shoes.

Arun joined KHSC four months ago as an advisor with the Leadership and Talent Development department.

Originally from Kerala, India, Arun is a licensed dentist but her sense of adventure is what inspired her to change careers and move to Canada.

“I wanted to step outside of my comfort zone and experience a different culture, country and people. I chose Kingston because my research lead me to the Health Care Administration program at St. Lawrence College.”

She started her new chapter and landed in the Limestone City on Jan. 1, 2017.

“Seeing snow for the first time was exciting! I still remember the hilarious pilot’s announcement. ‘No more sand, you will only see snow for the next couple of months.’ My first trip after landing was to the mall to find the warmest winter jacket and boots.”

Now a seasoned winter professional, it didn’t take long for Arun to fall in love with her new home.

“Kingston has a lot of history, character and charm. I love the beautiful walking trails we have, the restaurants and being able to walk or bike anywhere. I also appreciate how friendly the community is.”

Arun adds she feels the same welcoming spirit at KHSC and her goal is to keep spreading some TLC, especially at new employee welcome.
