Dr. Fitzpatrick has served as Chief of Staff and Executive Vice President of Medical and Academic Affairs at Kingston Health Sciences Centre since its inception in April 2017. In his Chief of Staff role, he reports to the Board of KHSC on the quality of care provided by physicians, dentists, midwives and extended care nursing at KHSC and oversees credentialing of physicians. In his EVP role, he reports to Dr. Pichora, CEO, on operational matters involving physicians across KHSC, including care provided by KHSC outside the hospital walls. He has provided executive leadership for the specialist component of the Integrated Care Pathways (ICP) for COPD and Heart Failure and is actively engaged as a specialist in providing rapid access to care for patients with moderate and severe COPD. He oversees the Patient Safety, Quality and Clinical Risk portfolio in addition to Physician Quality Improvement activities, ethics, the lead for Patient & Family Centred Care, the KHSC Innovation portfolio and his oversight, through Mr. Chris Gillies VP, also includes Infection Prevention and Control, ambulatory care clinics, pharmacy, labs and diagnostic imaging. His previous leadership experience included Chief of Staff & VP Medical & Academic Affairs at Hotel Dieu Hospital and he was the Chair, Division of Respirology & Sleep Medicine from 2007-2017.

Dr. Fitzpatrick is a graduate of University College Dublin, Ireland. His postgraduate clinical and research training was completed at University College Dublin and at the University of Edinburgh, Scotland. He is a Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada certified specialist in internal medicine and respirology, and an American Board-certified sleep specialist.

Dr. Fitzpatrick is a Professor in the Departments of Medicine and Biomedical and Molecular Sciences at Queen’s University. His research interests have focused on upper airway physiology and, from a clinical perspective, the diagnostic and management pathways for obstructive sleep apnea.
