Where to check in when I arrive

Kingston Health Sciences Centre provides care, support and services across a number of sites and there are several ways that you and your family members may access them. The information below may help you navigate your experience when you arrive at one of our hospital sites.

Hotel Dieu Hospital site

Urgent Care Centre

The Urgent Care Centre (UCC) is located at our Hotel Dieu Hospital site and the entrance is near the corner of Bagot and Brock streets. The UCC is open from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., 365 days of the year.

The UCC is for non-life threatening illnesses and injuries, including deep cuts or wounds needing stitches, sprains, strains, deep bruises, mild to moderate asthma attacks, insect bites and rashes, and various types of minor infections of the ear, urinary tract, or respiratory system. Patients are usually treated and able to go home.

All patients registered before 8:00 p.m. will be assessed and treated.

Children's outpatient clinic

The Children's Outpatient Clinic (COPC) is located at our Hotel Dieu Hospital site and is on Jeanne Mance 1. You can enter the hospital through the main doors off Brock Street. Take your first left from the main lobby and walk down the hall past the Cafe to the first door on your left.

The COPC is open from Monday to Friday, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and takes care of children who range in age from birth to 18 years. The COPC provides a walk-in urgent care clinic for pediatric patients who have non-life threatening illnesses or injuries.

When you arrive, take a seat and wait to be seen by the triage nurse. If you have an appointment booked to see someone in one of our specialty clinics such as cystic fibrosis, cardiology, endocrinology, diabetes, orthopedics or bowel management please go ahead to the registration desk.

Outpatient Clinics

There are various outpatient clinics at our Hotel Dieu Hospital site so please check your appointment slip carefully for information about which clinic you are supposed to attend. If you cannot find your appointment slip, please call 613-548-2342, or our toll-free number at 1-855-851-3490. To see a full listing of our clinics and service, click here. You can also ask for assistance at the information desk located in the main lobby when you arrive.

Day surgery

The Day Surgery unit is located at our Hotel Dieu Hospital site on Jeanne Mance 2. When you arrive, you can enter through the main entrance off Brock Street. Take the elevators in the main lobby up to level two and follow the signs to check in at the registration office.

Ear, Nose and Throat Clinics

We have a variety of clinics that operate out of the Murray Building at our Hotel Dieu Hospital site. The Murray Building is located at 144 Brock Street and is home to the Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) program, our Audiology and Speech Pathology program and our Otolaryngology clinic.

Kingston General Hospital site

Emergency

Our Emergency Department is located at our Kingston General Hospital site and is located at 41 King Street West and is open 24 hours per day, 365 days of the year.  The Emergency Department is for serious illnesses & injuries including such as severe bleeding, difficulty breathing, chest pains or pressure, trauma or injury to the head, sudden dizziness or difficulty seeing and severe abdominal pain. In most cases, patients arrive by ambulance and some patients need to be admitted to the hospital for a longer stay.

Surgery

If you have a pre-booked appointment for surgery, you will be admitted to the hospital through the Same Day Admission Centre, located on the second floor of our Kingston General Hospital site in the Connell wing. At the Same Day Admission Centre, you will register, get a locker for your coat and meet your nurse, who will ask you a few questions.

Our surgery schedule starts at 8:00 a.m. and in some cases you may be asked to come to the hospital the night before your surgery. However, in most cases you will only need to arrive at the hospital a few hours in advance of your scheduled time. If you would like more information about how to prepare for your surgery, please visit our Surgical Care page.

Elective Admission

If you are coming for a non-urgent, unscheduled visit, you will receive a phone call to let you know when we have a bed available. As an elective admission patient, you should plan to arrive at the Armstrong wing  entrance located off lower University Avenue and you can register at the admitting office on the first floor. From there, we will provide you with further directions and information.

Since we cannot plan for vacancies in advance, this call will likely come on short notice. We suggest you prepare ahead of time and pack a bag in advance as well as work out arrangements for a ride to the hospital. You should also consider any arrangements that will need to be made at home and in your personal life for while you are in the hospital.

Clinic Admissions

Sometimes you may be admitted during your visit to one of our outpatient clinics. If this happens, you will enter through the Armstrong wing entrance located off lower University Avenue and register at the admitting office on the first floor.

After-hours Admissions

Our Admitting Department is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week to help with after-hours admissions to the hospital.

Not sure where to go?
