Child and Youth Eating Disorders program

Kingston Health Sciences Centre’s (KHSC) Child and Youth Eating Disorders program provides treatment for individuals 8-17 years old who meet criteria for an eating disorder. Treatment consists of a comprehensive assessment, health care, dietary care, and integrated family-based therapy.

The program goals are:

  • Restoring physical health
  • Medication management
  • Regulating eating patterns and improving nutrition
  • Restoration, management, and maintenance of weight to allow normal growth and development
  • Equipping with tools and skills to manage eating disorder behaviours
  • Returning to age-appropriate developmental milestones
Assessment process
  1. Referrals are accepted from nurse practitioners or medical doctors. Learn how to make a referral here.
  2. Initial comprehensive four-hour intake assessment (including physical assessment) to determine diagnosis.
  3. Treatment recommendations are provided after the initial assessment, and voluntary treatment commences within one to two weeks.
Wait times

Wait times for an initial assessment vary from three months to one year for medically stable individuals. Medically unstable referrals are seen within one month of receiving the referral. Ongoing health monitoring with the referring or primary care practitioner is required until seen for an initial assessment.
