Bob Hale

There’s a photo of Bob Hale and his mom taped to his locker at Kingston Health Sciences Centre (KHSC).

It’s more than just a snapshot. It’s a symbol of family, dedication and the pride he feels working in Environmental Services.

Hale has been part of KHSC for just over four years, but his connection runs much deeper. His mother has worked here for more than 30 years, and now, the two often cross paths during shift change.

“It’s pretty cool,” he shares. “A lot of people here know her and will say, ‘She treated me like family when I started.’ I guess I had a bit of a leg up because of her, and I try to do the same for others.”

As a Support Services Flow Attendant and experienced team member, Hale has seen firsthand the impact of his work.

“When someone leaves the hospital, I go in and clean, sanitize and make the room good for the next patient. It’s more than cleaning - it’s about making a difference,” he explains. “You’re helping create a safe space for healing, whether it’s in a patient room, the operating room (OR) or labor and delivery. Every shift feels important.”

Hale, a former chef of 27 years, thrives on the people side of the job.

“I love everything about it. I’m a people person,” he says with a smile. “Here, you’re always talking with patients, visitors and staff. People ask for directions, or they just want someone to chat with. I like to think of it like being a greeter - except I get to make things cleaner and safer too.”

That spirit of teamwork and connection is what makes Hale and the entire team special, especially during Environmental Services  Week.

“In the OR, for example, you’ve got five or six of us working together. You can’t move a bed alone, so there’s always support. And I tell people all the time - if you have questions, call me,” Hale laughs. “That’s just who I am - I want to help others succeed.”

Outside of work, Hale loves to travel, camp and spend time with his friends and son. But he says the best part of his KHSC role is the balance it brings.

“Honestly, this is the best job I’ve ever had. My stress level went way down when I started here. The supervisors and managers are approachable, the team is supportive and the work is meaningful. It’s not always easy, but I think we’re doing pretty well.”

As KHSC celebrates Environmental Services Week, Hale is proud to be part of a team that often works behind the scenes but plays a critical role in patient care.

“It’s a positive place. You’re always learning, always meeting new people, always making a difference,” he reflects. “I’d recommend it to anyone.”

Because for Hale, this isn’t just a job - it’s family, purpose and pride, all rolled into one.
