To become a volunteer at Kingston Health Sciences Centre, you must complete the fivestep process listed below. Through this process, we will identify if there is a volunteer role available that is a good match for your interests, skills, and availability. Once the application process is complete, we will arrange program-specific training to help facilitate a smooth transition into your volunteer role.

Please be aware that we are currently not accepting applications from students to volunteer at KHSC, as we have filled our student positions for the fall of 2024. If you are a high school, college, or university student you can submit an application; however, it will not be reviewed or responded to until late October for possible winter intake (depending on availability of volunteer positions at that time). We thank you for your interest and look forward to connecting with you in October. If you are keen to contribute to our community prior to the winter we encourage you to visit the United Way's community volunteer database through this link to learn about volunteer roles with other organizations in KFLA.

1) Application Form

Please click here to complete our online application form if you are 16 years of age (the minimum age to volunteer at KHSC) or older.

Or, you can click here to contact Volunteer Services (613-548-2359 #1) if you prefer to have an application form mailed to you.

Once you have submitted your application, you will be invited to sign up for a virtual Volunteer Information Session where you will learn about the patients we serve, how volunteers impact every step of the patient journey, as well as more details on the steps listed below, with time for Q&A.

2) References

On the application form, you will provide the names of two references along with their contact information.  Volunteer Services will contact your references directly by email (or by phone if no email is available) with the link to our online reference form.  Please inform your references to watch for this email from @email as it may arrive in their junk email.

3) Criminal Reference Check and the Vulnerable Sector Search

Following an offer to join our team, all KHSC employees and volunteers must complete a Criminal Reference Check (CRC) as well as a Vulnerable Sector Search (VSS). These can be obtained through the police service that serves the municipality you live in. If you have completed a CRC/VSS within three months of your application submission, you can submit a copy of that report to Volunteer Services.

Kingston Health Sciences Centre is pleased to reimburse volunteers the cost of having a CRC/VSS completed as outlined during the application process.

4) Health Screening

Prior to confirmation of a volunteer role and shift, you must submit the results of a negative two-step tuberculosis (TB) test and provide proof of immunizations, including COVID-19 vaccination.

Click here for the form for your primary health care provider to complete.

Kingston Health Sciences Centre is pleased to reimburse volunteers the cost of having the health screening form completed as outlined during the application process.

5) Orientation

(approximately 1.5 hours)

Prior to a volunteer role and shift being assigned, you must complete the hospital orientation modules.  Through these e-modules you will learn about corporate and departmental policies and procedures, including information about safety and security, infection control, confidentiality and privacy. The e-modules can be completed at any point throughout the intake process at your convenience.
