STATEMENT

Kingston, ON –November, 19, 2018 - Kingston Health Sciences Centre declared a Code Silver after 6:00 p.m. on November 19 following a shooting in the Emergency Department at our KGH site involving an individual in the custody of Corrections Canada.

Code Silver is a planned response to ensure the safety of all health care workers, patients and visitors at the hospital when an individual is in possession of a weapon and an enhanced police response is required.

The Emergency Department was immediately locked down and thanks to the support of Kingston Police, Corrections Canada, and our Security staff, the situation was quickly controlled and the Emergency Department returned to normal operations.

One individual suffered serious but non-life threatening injuries as a result of the incident. We have brought in social workers and representatives from our Employee and Family Assistance Program to provide counselling for patients, families and staff.

Our priority at this time is to ensure we continue providing high-quality patient care via our Emergency Department and supporting the staff, physicians, patients and families as well as learners who were involved in this event.

We would like to thank our staff, physicians and residents who despite difficult circumstances have continued to act professionally and provide patient care. We will be conducting a debrief session with staff and hospital leaders as soon as possible to further review this incident.
