The KGH Research Institute is pleased to recognize Dr. Mona Sawhney as the winner of the KGHRI Fifth Anniversary Prize in Queen’s University’s 2020 Art of Research Competition.
Dr. Sawhney, a Kingston Health Sciences Centre nurse-scientist and nurse-practitioner specializing in chronic pain management, was awarded the $500 prize for “This is EPIC: Simulation education with patient actors to improve care.” Her photograph, which captures a quiet moment between a patient-actor and nurse trainee during a simulated pain-management procedure, was chosen for best representing patient-oriented and clinical research.
“We were researching the outcomes of a simulation intervention for nurses who care for patients receiving epidural analgesia for pain management after surgery,” explains Dr. Sawhney, who is also an Associate Professor of Nursing at Queen’s. “I wanted to show the real-to-life patient care environment, because is it such a unique way to provide education in health-care settings to practising clinicians.”

Now in its fifth year, Queen’s Art of Research Competition attracted more than 100 entries in nine prize categories. The winning images will be part of a digital promotion campaign under the banner of Discover Research @ Queen’s.
