When your family member's condition has improved to the point they no longer require the specialized care and monitoring the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) provides, they may be transferred to another unit in the hospital. The nature of your loved one's illness or injuries will determine where they will be moved.
It is possible they will require further help from a specialist to assist their recovery. Before transferring your family member, the ICU team will report important information to their colleagues in the receiving unit. The process is very similar for transfers outside of Kingston Health Sciences Centre such as to another hospital or to a long-term care facility.
If you have questions about transfers, please speak to a member of the ICU care team.
