Energy savings now being put towards patient care
KGH can add another award to our trophy cabinet for our energy conservation work as the hospital was awarded the Kingston Hydro Conservation Award in March 2015. Chosen from a group of four local nominees, the award is given to a Kingston Hydro customer for their commitment to the reduction of electricity consumption and demand.
“The team was recognized for our participation in the Save On Energy Retrofit Program which has saved almost $800,000 annually in total energy costs for KGH and these savings redirected to patient care,” said Gary Greene, Manager of Plant Operations & Maintenance who received the award on behalf of the hospital.
In 2010 KGH undertook a $10 million project to retrofit the hospital to make it more energy efficient. The scope of the work included replacing more than 9,500 lighting fixtures with more energy efficient models, upgrading the building automation systems including air handlers, boilers and chillers as well as replacing windows in older sections of the hospital.
This work has reduced the hospital’s carbon footprint by 14 per cent.
“The people who most benefit from this work are the patients. Not only are we directing our savings back into patient care, but as health care providers we are taking a leadership role in reducing our carbon footprint to improve the health of our community, including current and future patients,” says Allan McLuskie, Director of Facilities Management, Maintenance.
