Whether through our work, training or volunteering, we each bring a unique passion to KGH. Now KGH has been recognized for that passion by being named one of 17 national finalists for Canada’s Passion Capitalists Awards, a national award program that celebrates organizations that have achieved long-term success by creating ‘passion capital’ – the energy, intensity and sustainability to generate superior results.

We’ll find out if we’ve been named a winner during a live broadcast airing on Business News Network on November 20 at 3 p.m.

“Our status as a national finalist is a tremendous recognition of the 7,000-strong community of staff, learners and volunteers who infuse KGH with their passion in order to provide our patients and families with Outstanding Care, Always and make our hospital a great place to work,” says KGH President and CEO Leslee Thompson.

While we wait to find out if we’ve made the winners’ circle, KGH is celebrating being amongst some impressive fellow finalists, including WestJet, Canadian Tire and Bridgepoint Healthcare. From these 17 finalists, 10 will be selected as national winners and will join the ranks of such previous winners as GoodLife Fitness, Shoppers Drug Mart and Southlake Regional Health Centre. In all, 40 organizations from across Canada applied.

Emergency Department nurse Angela Arnold says that she’s proud that KGH is up for such a prestigious award. “In the ED, our passion is teamwork and caring for the complex medical and emotional needs of our patients and families. To have KGH’s name alongside WestJet and Canadian Tire not only makes me proud to be a Canadian but proud of KGH and Kingston,” says Arnold. “To win would put KGH on the map and would be a boost to everyone at KGH.”

To be eligible KGH had to demonstrate that it has the seven principles of passion capital, as outlined in Paul Alofs’ book Passion Capital: The World’s Most Valuable Asset. Those principles are: a well-defined set of beliefs; a high-performance culture; the courage to take risks; a strong brand and reputation; masterful allocation of resources; a long-term strategy aligned with the brand; and persistence.

“KGH embodies each of these principles. Our energy, dedication and persistence, or ‘passion capital’, is as important an asset as our intellectual and financial capital,” says Thompson. “Indeed, KGH is the high-performing, patient- and family-centred organization that we are today because of our passion for what we do, the courage we show and the culture we’ve created.”

To help us celebrate our finalist status while we wait to hear if we’ll be named national winners, members of the KGH community are invited to tweet or email us between November 18 and December 1 and describe ‘the passion you see every day at KGH’. Two copies of Passion Capital: The World’s Most Valuable Asset are up for grabs for the best Tweet and email entry. Winners will be notified on Dec. 3.
