The annual Relay for Life is now out of the starting blocks. This year, the Canadian Cancer Society is teaming up with the University Hospitals Kingston Foundation (UHKF) and KGH for the all-night affair.
The 12-hour fundraising event kicks off at 7 p.m. on Friday, June 1 and runs all the way to 7 a.m. on Saturday morning at the Royal Military College in Kingston.
Everyone is invited to take part. The event involves teams of 10 who take turns walking, running or strolling around a track. Cancer survivors are invited to walk the first lap of every Relay for Life event - the Survivors' Victory Lap. Then at dusk, a poignant Luminary Ceremony takes place where candles are lit around the track to honour those lost to, and touched by, cancer.
This year, proceeds will support the Canadian Cancer Societyís research and community services work as well as the full range of care being given by the Cancer Centre of Southeastern Ontario at KGH.
"With this new partnership, funds raised through Relay for Life will help us ensure that we are able to provide patients who count on us for care with the best possible programs and services," says CEO Leslee Thompson.
The event is also an opportunity to get together with family and friends to celebrate cancer survivors, to remember loved ones lost to cancer, and fight back in the hope of finding more cures for this terrible disease.
"We know we are fortunate in Kingston to have a new cancer centre supported by dedicated donors from across our region where people battling cancer and their loved ones are receiving high quality care from some extraordinary caregivers," said Denise Cumming, Executive Director of UHKF.
