We are proud to share the Kingston Health Sciences Centre (KHSC) Annual Report for 2024–2025—our boldest year yet.
KHSC is Southeastern Ontario’s leading provider of specialized care, home to a growing number of regional programs, health-care innovations, and a recognized provincial leader in research and academic medicine.
We’re growing in every way that matters. We are serving more patients than ever before, advancing specialized care for the entire region, and stepping confidently into our leadership role within Ontario’s wider health-care system. From providing complex cancer care and supporting critically ill patients, to acquiring advanced diagnostic technology and conducting life-changing research—this is the place that people turn to for answers, expertise, and hope.
This past year, our commitment to leading-edge care and regional partnerships has never been more evident:
- We successfully launched Lumeo, the shared electronic health record for hospitals across Southeastern Ontario—an achievement already improving patient experiences and outcomes across the system.
- We cut the ribbon on our new PET-CT program—the only one of its kind between Ottawa and Toronto—so that patients can access specialized diagnostics closer to home.
- We continued to strengthen our partnerships with Queen’s University, the Frontenac, Lennox & Addington Ontario Health Team, partner hospitals and health-care providers across the region, as well as with the provincial government.
Our leadership has been recognized nationally and internationally. KHSC moved up in Newsweek’s World’s Best Hospitals ranking, was named one of Canada’s Top 40 Research Hospitals for the 13th year in a row by Research Infosource, and earned national awards for organ donation, nursing excellence, and renal program innovation. These honours reflect the extraordinary work of our people—and reinforce our role as one of Canada’s premier academic health sciences centres.
Every milestone this year—every breakthrough, every quiet act of compassion, every learner trained—reminds us of the power of our people and our purpose. Whether you are a patient who trusted us with your care, a team member who gave your all, or a partner who helped move us forward, we thank you for joining us on this journey.

Adult heart donation at KHSC, first of its kind in Canada
Early on May 7 at KHSC, Robert Louis “Robbie” Sherren became the first adult heart donor in Canada to donate after circulatory death, which happens when a person’s heart permanently stops beating.

KHSC launches southeastern Ontario’s first PET-CT program
KHSC has reached a major milestone in the advancement of medical imaging for southeastern Ontario, officially completing construction of the region’s first PET-CT suite. A ceremony held on March 26, 2025 celebrated the achievement bringing this world-class diagnostic capability to patients closer to home.

Donation of portable MRI will help improve ICU care and reduce wait times
Kingston Health Sciences Centre (KHSC) is now only the second hospital in Ontario to have a portable magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) machine for clinical use in its Intensive Care Unit (ICU), thanks to the generosity of donor Stephen Sorensen who made a $500,000 donation through the University Hospitals Kingston Foundation.

KHSC trials minimally invasive shockwave procedure for the first time in Ontario
KHSC has become the first in Ontario to pilot, and successfully complete, an iliac artery shockwave lithotripsy, using a technology developed to re-open heavily calcified arteries. Iliac artery disease is caused by a slow buildup of calcium causing narrowing in the major arteries that supply blood to the pelvis and legs.

Time: It’s part of what makes KHSC’s acute stroke team tick
We’re kind of a big deal. The last time we checked, Kingston Health Sciences Centre’s Regional Stroke Centre of southeastern Ontario was still the fastest centre - of the 11 in Ontario - to remove clots and restore blood flow to the brain with Endovascular Treatment (EVT). And we’ve been the fastest for seven straight years.

As southeastern Ontario’s regional health sciences centre, we play a vital role in ensuring that patients benefit from coordinated, seamless care across the health system. By leading collaborative projects, driving research, and joining important community initiatives, KHSC helps strengthen care not just within our hospitals but across the entire province.

KHSC launches new Lumeo Regional Health Information System
KHSC launched an electronic health information system, in partnership with six partners across southeastern Ontario. The project, called “Lumeo,” involved years of preparation and is a major leap forward in achieving integrated patient care by allowing medical records to be shared securely and seamlessly between care partners.

Southeastern Ontario hospitals awarded $1M to explore Artificial Intelligence in reducing physician administrative burden
The Canadian Medical Association (CMA), MD Financial Management Inc. (MD) and Scotiabank have awarded $1 million to Kingston Health Sciences Centre (KHSC) and it’s hospital partners, through the Health Care Unburdened Grant program, to explore the role of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) in reducing administrative burden for physicians.

Expanding possibilities for dialysis care
For patients on dialysis, time is valuable — whether at work, or with friends and family, every moment counts. In-clinic dialysis has long been the default for care, but it means patients spend time and money travelling to and from a fixed schedule of appointments. But there’s a change afoot and home dialysis is offering patients across the region with a different option.

For the 13th year in a row, Kingston Health Sciences Centre (KHSC) and its research institute, the Kingston General Health Research Institute (KGHRI), have been named one of Canada’s Top 40 research hospitals by Research Infosource. This year, KHSC has climbed into 23rd place, up two spots from the previous year.

Last fiscal year, Lee and the Medical Imaging department performed more than 260,000 imaging exams. We’re talking X-rays, CT and MRI scans, plus radiation-related treatment services and more. It’s not an exaggeration when we say this team completes hundreds of scans and procedures every single day.

Patrys’ $1 million investment in Genomics at KHSC advancing Personalized Medicine and Infectious Disease surveillance
Jay and Kendal Patry are investing $1 million to establish Kingston Health Sciences Centre’s (KHSC) first “Clinical Chair” role, in an area many refer to as the future of medicine – genomics. Genomics focuses on using knowledge about our genes (DNA) to improve medical care.

B’nai Brith Kingston raises $1.6 million for KHSC robotic surgery program
B'nai Brith Kingston has made a substantial investment in local health care, raising $1.6 million for the robotic surgery program at KHSC, through its annual fundraiser on Nov. 21. This is by far the largest amount ever raised in the 20-year history of the event, which featured a Q&A with two-time Olympic gold medalist Andre De Grasse.

Rose of Hope raises $400,000 to help buy new MRI machine
Rose of Hope Golf Tournament event chair Sherri McCullough likes to tell the people who are taking part in the major fundraiser that they are doing more than playing golf. They are saving lives. These golfers are saving lives by raising money to help Breast Imaging Kingston (BIK) facility purchase a MRI machine, an important tool to diagnosis breast cancer.

Power of Hope Golf Tournament raises $152,500 for prostate cancer care
After directly benefiting from donor-funded equipment, Mike wanted to pay it forward and help the next generation of prostate cancer patients. He saw the success of the Rose of Hope Golf Tournament and was inspired to start Power of Hope. Now in its fourth year, the Power of Hope Golf Tournament has raised a grand total of $562,000 for prostate cancer care at KHSC.

2024 Tim Hortons Smile Cookie Campaign raises $177,413 for KHSC
Health-care professionals have a big smile on their faces today, after being presented a cheque for $177,413 in support of child and youth mental health programs at KHSC. The money comes from this year’s Tim Hortons Smile Cookie campaign, which ran from April 29 to May 5, and saw all Kingston-area Tim Hortons restaurants donate 100 per cent of their Smile Cookie sales.
Our Performance in 2024–25
We have much to celebrate from this past fiscal year. We’re one of Ontario’s most financially efficient hospitals and we continue to receive top marks when measuring clinical performance against our peers. For example, we have amongst the best door-to-needle times for patients experiencing strokes and rank as one of Ontario’s top transplant centres.
