For the 13th year in a row, Kingston Health Sciences Centre (KHSC) and its research institute, the Kingston General Health Research Institute (KGHRI), have been named one of Canada’s Top 40 research hospitals by Research Infosource. This year, KHSC has climbed into 23rd place, up two spots from the previous year.

This achievement is the result of an 18 percent increase in research investment at KHSC over the past year, to a total of more than $37 million annually. This milestone, underscores the KHSC/KGHRI commitment to advancing patient-oriented research, fostering innovative partnerships, and driving healthcare innovation in collaboration with its key partner, Queen’s University.

“Our rise in these rankings highlights the growing impact of research at KHSC,” says Dr. David Pichora, President and CEO of KHSC. “Innovation is a core value for our organization and our research mandate allows us to deliver cutting-edge care and shape the future of healthcare for our patients.”

KGHRI, the research arm of KHSC, supports more than 290 active researchers and over 120 ongoing clinical studies. These studies encompass diverse areas of focus, including allergy, bleeding disorders, cancer, cardiology, critical care, psychiatry, radiology, and gastroenterology. Many projects also involve collaboration with hospitals and universities across Canada and around the globe.

“This ranking recognizes the incredible work of our dedicated research teams, who continue to drive groundbreaking research and impact patient health,” says Dr. Steven Smith, President and CEO of the KGHRI, Vice-President of Health Sciences Research at KHSC, and Deputy Vice-Principal Research at Queen’s. “It reflects KHSC’s role as a destination for innovation and academic excellence, strengthening our ability to attract world-class clinical research talent and secure critical funding.”

KHSC’s placement among Canada’s leading research hospitals reinforces its role as an academic health sciences centre with research and education mandate. It also highlights the importance of our successful funding partnerships with federal, provincial, industry, philanthropic, and community organizations, including the University Hospitals Kingston Foundation.

“Our Top 40 ranking not only celebrates our success, but inspires future growth in health research excellence,” adds Dr. Smith. “We are committed to translating discoveries into tangible treatments that will impact patients in the southeast region and around the world.”
