Dr. Stephen Vanner

Dr. Vanner obtained his BSc in Life Sciences, MD, and MSc in Neurophysiology from Queen’s University, where he also completed his internal medicine residency. Following subspecialty training and a research fellowship at Hotel Dieu Hospital in 1988, he completed his postdoctoral fellowship at the Vollum Institute in Portland, Oregon. In 1991, he joined the Queen’s faculty within the Department of Medicine, with cross-appointments in biology and physiology. He is currently a Queen’s Health Sciences professor, the Director of Clinical Research at Kingston Health Sciences Centre, and the Director of Queen’s Gastrointestinal Diseases Research Unit. He was also the inaugural Director of Queen’s Translational Institute of Medicine. An accomplished researcher, Dr. Vanner has published over 195 journal articles, received more than $20 million in research funding, and been recognized with numerous honours and awards for scientific excellence. He recently co-founded pHarm Therapeutics Inc., a company dedicated to developing innovative pH-sensitive pain medications. Additionally, Stephen has assumed several leadership roles within the Queen’s Health Sciences faculty. He is currently serving as the interim dean, as well as the interim CEO of the Southeastern Ontario Academic Medical Organization.
