Our health care team is composed of registered dietitians, nurse educators, a pharmacist and a social worker.

Pediatric Diabetes Education Program
What to expect for your first visit
Since Type 1 diabetes is usually sudden in onset, children are seen by the diabetes team within 24 hours of diagnosis. Insulin treatment is necessary as soon as a diagnosis occurs. Referrals generally come from family physicians, outpatient clinics or emergency rooms.
Our team is made up of a Pediatric Endocrinologist (a doctor who is a diabetes specialist), Pediatricians, Diabetes Nurse Educators (DNE), Registered Dietitians (RD), a Social Worker, and Child Life Specialists.
At the time your child is diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes, he/she will see one of the doctors and the DNE, and the care plan will be individualized to your child's needs. On the first day, the DNE will teach you how to measure your child's blood glucose (sugar), and how to inject insulin.
Your child and family will then return daily for education with the DNE, RD and Social Worker, and after the initial survival skills are learned, the team members and physician will follow you by phone to adjust the insulin doses. You will eventually learn how to do this yourself.
Telephone advice is available Monday to Friday during the day, and is provided by the nurse and dietitian. After hours and on the weekends you will be directed to call a specific physician, or the Pediatrician on call.
Your child will also have a clinic visit every three months with the whole team, and these appointments take place in the Children's Outpatient Centre (COPC). Please bring blood glucose (sugar) records to each clinic appointment.
At each visit, an A1c is done by fingerpick and the results are shared with you. This is a blood test that shows the average blood glucose levels over the past three months, and is an overall indicator of your child's diabetes management.
With family support and the help of the multidisciplinary team your child can lead a healthy and productive life.
Frontenac Diabetes Education Program
The Frontenac Diabetes Education Program (FDEP) offers a variety of diabetes education programs in the rural communities of Frontenac County north of Kingston. Join us for a variety of diabetes education programs to assist you in the management of your diabetes, such as:

- Community Presentations
- Learn more about blood glucose monitoring, weight reduction, healthy eating, complication prevention and more
We have regular classes throughout the year, which are held at the Verona Medical Centre located on the east side of Highway 38 just north of Muddy Waters (former Martha's Place Restaurant) in Verona.
