The young patients in Kingston Health Sciences Centre’s (KHSC) inpatient Pediatric Unit received an early holiday surprise as they were visited by players from the Kingston Frontenacs on December 13.

Aside from smiling for pictures and signing autographs, the Fronts also came bearing gifts - handing out special team teddy bears and ticket vouchers for patients and families to use for an upcoming game of their choice. Some tickets will also be given to patients in the Children’s Out Patient Centre at our Hotel Dieu Hospital site.

“This is something that’s bigger than the game of hockey, getting to have a purpose in the community, getting to help out and make these kids’ day a little better,” said Assistant Captain Liam Murray. “It shows you’ve got to be grateful for what you have. These kids are battling and are obviously extremely strong for what they’re going through. It’s something I respect and am grateful to take part in.”

The visit allowed patients and families a chance to take a break during what can be an otherwise stressful time.

“It’s not easy for a child to be in the hospital at any time of year, but we are aware that it’s especially difficult during the holidays,” said Manager of Pediatrics Kerri-Lee Bisonette. “We do whatever we can to make this time of year extra special for our patients and we appreciate the support of our community and the Fronts for bringing smiles to the faces of our young patients.”

The visit also had a lasting impact on the players.

“It’s extremely humbling and it’s an emotional subject too, because you don’t think of yourself as anything more than a hockey player. But to get the chance to be something bigger than that and brighten these kids’ day it’s very special,” said Murray.

The visit and tickets were graciously donated by Secura Financial in partnership with the Secura Wish Foundation and the Smilezone Foundation.

The Smilezone Foundation’s have been major supporters of KHSC, completing upgrades to the inpatient Pediatrics unit at our KGH site in 2016 and in the Children’s Out Patient Centre, the Child Development Centre gymnasium, and the Ear, Nose and Throat play area at our Hotel Dieu Hospital site in 2015.
