COVID-19 and Pregnancy

Visitor limits at KHSC
We are temporarily limiting visitors to our hospital sites during the COVID-19 pandemic. Thank you for your support in keeping our patients, staff and hospital environment safe.
For more details, click here.

Whether you are infected with COVID-19 or not, our nurses, midwives and physicians will do everything possible to care for you and achieve a normal delivery.

Most pregnant women who are not infected by COVID-19 are still having normal deliveries, however, the experience of coming to the hospital to deliver or for your appointments has changed for the protection of our patients and our staff.

If you have tested positive for COVID-19 or have symptoms (cough, difficulty breathing, sore throat), call your health care provider or the labour and delivery unit at KGH site (613-549-6666 extension 2315) before arriving for your delivery or clinic appointment so that isolation plans can be put in place.

There is limited data on the potential impact of the virus on pregnancy or newborns. To keep up to date on the latest information, we suggest checking KHSC’s COVID-19 webpage, KFL&A Public Health and The MotHERS Program regularly.

Pregnancy and the COVID-19 Vaccine

We understand that it can be difficult to decide whether you should get the COVID-19 vaccine during your pregnancy.

There is limited evidence about the potential harm associated with getting the COVID-19 vaccine while pregnant, however, the risk of complications from becoming infected with COVID-19 while pregnant far outweigh any perceived risk associated with vaccination.

It’s important that someone who is pregnant or breastfeeding have a discussion with a health care provider who is familiar with their pregnancy about the risks and benefits of the COVID-19 vaccine. This includes community prevalence of COVID-19, workplace risk of exposure, individual risk for severe illness, pre-existing conditions, gestational age, and more.
