KHSC's ECHO lab
KHSC's cardiac program has received additional funding, part of a number of funding notices provided by the Province this summer.

This summer Kingston Health Sciences Centre (KHSC) received several new funding notices, totaling $17.5 million, aimed at reducing wait-times, completing much needed infrastructure projects, and providing care to the growing number of patients being seen from across southeastern Ontario.

KHSC has received:

  • A $9.7 million increase in base funding through the province’s Growth and Efficiency Model (GEM). The GEM model rewards hospitals for operating efficiently while providing the highest quality of patient care. This funding recognizes the increased patient volumes at KHSC due to the population growth in southeastern Ontario.
  • $1.4 million additional funding for KHSC’s cardiac program to address inflationary costs associated with delivering this vital regional service. KHSC is the only hospital in southeastern Ontario to offer a comprehensive cardiac program including cardiac surgery, interventional cardiology, as well as operate a specialized cardiac intensive care unit.
  • $2.6 million to increase patient volumes within KHSC’s MRI and CT imaging suites, provide additional transplant procedures as part of KHSC’s regional transplant program, perform additional surgical procedures such as bariatric surgery and hip surgery, as well as provide additional procedures for patients with Chronic Heart Failure and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD).
  • $3.8 million in Health Infrastructure Renewal Funding (HIRF) to support infrastructure upgrades at KHSC’s two hospital sites, including external masonry repairs of the Johnson wing at the Hotel Dieu Hospital (HDH) site, replace older elevators at the HDH site, as well as to repair the roof of the Dietary wing at the Kingston General Hospital site.

“This infusion of funding from the province demonstrates that KHSC plays a vital role as the anchor of southeastern Ontario’s health-care system and is a good steward of taxpayer dollars, efficiently providing specialized services that aren’t available elsewhere in the region," says KHSC President and CEO Dr. David Pichora. "As our role continues to grow, so too does the volume of patients we serve each year. This funding will also allow us to expand some of our services to better serve our patients and their families.”

“Kingston Health Sciences Centre is an important resource for community hospitals and primary care providers throughout Lanark-Frontenac-Kingston," says Lanark-Frontenac-Kingston MPP John Jordan. "I thank Dr. David Pichora and all of the staff at KHSC for their continued efforts to provide the best of service.”
