That's why we include you in every decision about your care. During your stay at KGH, doctors, nurses and other health care professionals will work closely with you will be part of your care team. The makeup of your team will vary depending on the type of care you need. The following are just some of the people who might be involved in your care:
Doctor
While every member of your care team is important and every voice makes a vital contribution, your doctor is ultimately responsible for the care you receive.
Nurses
There will be many nurses on your team. They’re the ones who check in with you regularly, give you medicine and make sure you get the care that your doctor and you have agreed on.
STROKE SPECIALIST CASE MANAGER
This person will work with you and your family after a stroke. The specialist will help you get ready to leave the hospital and will work to ensure that everything has been done to support you after discharge.
ENDOCRINOLOGIST
This is a doctor who specializes in diagnosing and treating hormone problems by attempting to restore hormone balance within the endocrine system.
GASTROENTEROLOGIST
This is a doctor who specializes in diseases of the digestive system. They evaluate, diagnose, manage, and treat its symptoms and conditions.
NEPHROLOGIST
This is a doctor who specializes in the diagnosis and management of kidney disease. The kidneys are vital for maintaining normal fluid and electrolyte balance in the body.
NEUROLOGIST
This is a doctor who specializes in neurology and is trained to investigate, or diagnose and treat neurological disorders.
Respiratory Therapist
A respiratory therapist helps keep you breathing. When we need to ensure that your lungs are functioning properly, we make sure a respiratory therapist is part of your team.
Medical Radiation Technologist
When we need to do an exam to see what's going on inside your body, we call the Diagnostic Imaging department to provide an X-ray, MRI, etc.
Clinical Dietitian
The food you eat while you heal is an important part of your recovery and a dietitian will help make sure you get the nutrition you require.
Community Care Access Centre (CCAC) Care Coordinator
Do you think you might need help living independently after you leave the hospital? A Community Care Access Centre case manager can assess your needs, arrange in-home services and connect you with other people who can help.
Environmental Services Assistant
These are the people who make sure your room and washroom are clean. They also clean patient areas, treatment areas and public areas of the hospital.
Medical Laboratory Technologists
These are the people who perform the tests your care team orders for you. You’ll probably have several medical lab technologists working on your team.
Occupational Therapist
The occupational therapist is interested in finding out more about what you do in your everyday life. The OT looks at your vision, thinking, and memory. They may also work with you to help you do things for yourself, like showering, dressing, and cooking.
Patient Care Assistant
When your nurses need extra support, they may call a patient care assistant to help you with your daily living activities.
Pharmacist
A hospital pharmacist will confirm all the medications you were taking at home and reconcile these with the medications you are ordered in the hospital. Since medications are usually an important part of your treatment plan, the pharmacist will also identify and resolve drug related problems including dosing adjustments, drug interactions and adverse drug reactions.
Physiotherapist
Your physiotherapist helps you get moving again with therapeutic exercises designed to increase your strength, mobility and independence.
Porter
Your porter will transport you around the hospital by wheelchair, stretcher or bed, and they’ll escort you when you’re able to walk on your own.
Psychologist
A psychologist is a professional who evaluates and studies behavior and mental processes. Sometimes we will call in a psychologist as part of your care team.
Social Worker
We know that a hospital stay can be stressful. Your social worker is a supportive teammate who can provide counselling and important information for you and your family.
Speech Language Pathologist
If you need help with speaking or swallowing, we’ll call in a speech language pathologist.
Spiritual Care Specialist
You don’t have to be religious to need spiritual care. If you’re feeling anxious or you need a sympathetic ear, one of our chaplains is available 24 hours-a-day.
Volunteers
KGH volunteers are an important part of your care team. They provide companionship, help you write letters and make phone calls, escort you to your hair appointments and more.
