Stroke

If you've had a stroke, you know it is a sudden and traumatic experience. It's also the start of a life-long journey to recovery.

You may be worried about the next steps in your recovery, and as part of your team, we will work together with you and your family to provide the support you need.

When you come to Kingston Health Sciences Centre's (KHSC) Kingston General Hospital (KGH) site in need of stroke care, you'll be in good hands. We are the regional stroke centre for southeastern Ontario, and have been recognized as having one of the best stroke treatment times in Canada.

You will most likely be given a room on the seventh floor of our Kidd wing (Kidd 7) and receive care from a health-care team that is made up of a number of different individuals.

Who is on your team depends on the type of care you require. These interprofessional teams will always include doctors and nurses, but other individuals such as patient care assistants, occupational therapists, physiotherapists and dietitians, just to name a few, may also be involved in your care. You can always count on a range of people to play a key role in your health-care journey. Learn more about some of the people you may meet on your care team.

If you or a loved one has had a stroke, please read our Partners in Stroke Recovery guide. You can use this guide during your recovery in the hospital and as you continue your recovery journey at home. It will help you learn more about stroke and will provide you with information on how to take charge of your health. If you have any questions about your care or recovery, please speak to any member of your health-care team. We are always happy to speak with you and provide you with more information. You can also find additional information on the Heart and Stroke and  Stroke Network of Southeastern Ontario websites.

Ongoing care

As an outpatient, you may be referred to a stroke prevention clinic at KHSC or in your home community. To be seen in a stroke clinic, you must be referred by your doctor or another health-care provider.
