Genetics Patient & Family Day

Genetics Patient-Family Day is an annual social and educational event to help patients and families affected by genetic conditions connect, share stories, learn about available resources/services, and enjoy some entertainment and activities. 

The event is a fun family friendly atmosphere, with entertainment, guest speakers and refreshments. It will take place in October 2018 (date is TBD) Invitation letters will be sent out by mail to patients in August 2018, but if you have any questions or would like to receive updates about the event, please contact by email @email

The event is organized by the Division of Genetics at Kingston Health Sciences Centre and Queen’s University, and is open to patients and families who have a genetic diagnosis in any of the following categories:

  • Developmental delay or intellectual disability
  • Metabolic conditions (Inborn Errors of Metabolism)
  • Hereditary cancer syndromes
  • Huntington disease
  • Inherited cardiac disease (i.e. HCM, Long QT syndrome, Familial Thoracic Aneurysm syndromes)

Some examples of activities offered in during past events include:

  • Sharing circles for patients and families to talk about their experiences with genetic conditions
  • Guest speakers from the hospital and from the community
  • Presentations by developmental pediatrics, social work, and a tax specialist regarding available services and benefits
  • A joint event with the Huntington Society of Canada National Symposium
  • Information booths from a number of community organizations, including Breast Cancer Action Kingston, Kids Inclusive, Huntington Society of Canada, H’Art Centre, and Community Living
  • A low protein cooking class for families of children with metabolic conditions
  • Bouncy castle, colouring, and crafts for the kids
  • Entertainment provided by TK Danceworks and live music
  • Silent Auction
  • Pizza lunch
