About the Substance Treatment and Rehabilitation Team

START supports patients with substance use disorders during their hospital stay. The team consists of addiction physicians, addiction Nurses and an addiction care navigator, and supports patients across both KHSC sites.

START physicians are able to provide assessments, counselling and pharmacological interventions to help patients manage substance use disorders and

The team also has a physician who can provide consults at the Providence Transitional Care Centre, Providence Care and the KHSC Detoxification Centre. 

For patients and family members

When a patient arrives at the Emergency Department with a substance use disorder, the START addiction care navigator and an addiction nurses will liaise with care partners to develop an individualized treatment plan. This plan may contain pharmacological interventions, referrals to internal and external programs, education, informal counselling and harm reduction education and supplies.

START uses eConsult to coordinate care with the patient’s primary care providers. This facilitates continuity of care and allows providers to follow up if they have additional questions, concerns or need assistance treating their patient’s addictions.
