New strategy shaping the future of Cancer Care at KGH

The building is done and the brand new cancer care space is officially open. Now it's time to set our sights on the future.

“Redevelopment has been a key focus for everyone involved in cancer care at KGH for the last several years. Now it's time to focus on what's next for cancer care at KGH,” says Brenda Carter, regional vice-president, cancer services.

That's why last year Carter spearheaded a process to develop a strategy that brings together our new facilities and long-standing commitment to patients and families into a three-year plan for achieving Outstanding Cancer Care, Always.

“This strategy is our blueprint for the future,” says Carter. “It provides us with a focused set of priorities that will help us work together to provide the best possible cancer patient and family experience, while fulfilling our role as the region's complex-acute and specialty cancer care provider.”

For example, the Cancer Care at KGH strategy will help us transform things like the way patient information is exchanged between care providers, how we work together as teams to deliver patient-centred cancer care and how we deliver emergency cancer care.

The Cancer Care at KGH strategy has been in development since January 2011, when Carter and the Cancer Care at KGH strategy steering committee began extensive consultations with a range of staff, physicians, volunteers and patients across the hospital. The Cancer Care at KGH strategy links directly to the KGH 2015 strategic directions and defines KGH's specific role in the cancer care journey in the context of broader regional and provincial cancer plans.

“Having this alignment between what's happening in Cancer Care at KGH, at KGH more broadly, and then in our region and our province means we're working as part of a system of care to better serve the needs of cancer patients and families everywhere,” says Carter. “Much of the work outlined in the Cancer Care at KGH strategy is already underway in some form, but now we have an opportunity to plan our work in the context of the bigger picture, attract directed funding and measure our success.”

Over the summer, cancer care leaders and staff will be engaged to help translate the Cancer Care at KGH strategy into clear action steps for each area.

"Cancer Care at KGH is the core for cancer care activity for Kingston and our region,” says Dr. Catherine de Metz, Regional Lead and Head of the Radiation Oncology Program at KGH. “This strategy will help provide our dedicated health-care professionals with direction as they continue to deliver patient-centered care. It's an important framework.“
