If you’ve ever watched a motorsport you’ve probably seen a pit crew leap into action.

It’s a race against the clock as they’re making repairs, changing tires and refueling.

Ronnie Lott is part of a pit crew of his own at Kingston Health Sciences Centre (KHSC).

But instead of rushing onto a track, the lead hand environmental services assistant and his team make stops in operating rooms (ORs).

“We are responsible for cleaning and turning over each OR after each procedure, as well as the general cleanliness of the surgical department,” explains Lott.

“I like to think of us as the ground crew for the ORs. The staff rely on us for efficient and timely turnovers so all surgeries are completed on time for patient satisfaction.”

And timing is everything.

As the largest surgical program in the region, KHSC surgeons and OR staff complete anywhere from 18 to 30 procedures a day, Monday to Friday.

Meaning Lott and his colleagues make dozens of pit stops a day to disinfect tables, beds and patient monitors.

They also remove unnecessary equipment, damp dust lights and other surfaces, discard linens, debris and garbage, and so much more.

“We need to prioritize incoming tasks based on urgency. It’s a fast paced environment and everyone works together to ensure the day goes smoothly.

“We’re valued members of the OR team and my colleagues are outstanding. I enjoy building relationships with people of different specialties and being able to observe and be part of the life changing patient care they provide.”

And when Lott isn’t under the OR lights, he likes to look up at the night sky with his telescope and check out stars and constellations.

And speaking of stars, Lott is a bit of a minor celebrity himself.

He’s been an extra in not one, not two, but three movies!

We could tell you which ones, but do yourself a favour and the next time you see Lott ask him yourself.

Between the films and his work with KHSC, he has some great stories to share.
