Getting Started on Your Research
Learn about the W.J. Henderson Centre for Patient-Oriented Research
Setting up your research program or starting a study? KGHRI works closely with University Research Services at Queen's.
The list below will help you make sure you are covering all of the necessary steps for getting your research study underway.
- Develop your research proposal, budget, and supporting documentation.
- Seek assistance with a research methodologist, biostatistician and/or research facilitator from our Clinical Research Services.
- Consult early with hospital departments impacted by your project to ensure your research proposal can be carried out in a hospital setting and/or your budget adequately reflects the true cost of the research occurring.
- Familiarize yourself with hospital and university research policies.
- Seek necessary funding to support your research.
- Obtain necessary certifications for your research:

- If conducting a clinical trial, ensure your clinical trial is registered on the NIH registry.
- Work with the University Research Services Contracts Unit or KGH Research Institute to negotiate any research agreements/contracts.
- Obtain research hospital appointments for Queen`s Faculty (non-clinician), staff, students & trainees conducting research in a hospital setting.
NOTE: In order for all researchers, research staff, students, and trainees to obtain a KHSC Security Badge, a hospital appointment is required regardless of length of time working in a hospital setting. - Obtain clinical research training (e.g., GCP, TDG/IATA) made available online by the KGH Research Institute -- please contact Lisa McAvoy for details.
- Complete a KHSC Computer Access Request Form (CARF) and/or register for a KGH Research Institute Email Domain, if needed.
