Minimally invasive surgery (MIS) can treat a number of women’s health conditions – from cancer, to endometriosis, abnormal bleeding and more. But the experts at KHSC who specialize in these procedures do more than operate – they are on a mission to improve access to healthcare for all individuals in need of obstetrical or gynecological care.
In fact, the equipment used for these procedures was partially funded by physicians in the department of obstetrics and gynecology in 2019, and the program has steadily been growing ever since. The team is in surgery five days a week, but remain committed to bettering women’s health outside of the operating room, too.
“We are inspired by our patients every day and are in a unique position to advocate for their quality of life,” says Dr. Romy Nitsch. “Not only can we help them with surgery, but we can move the needle and fight for better care for all of our patients at a system level.”
This means conducting research into areas of women’s health that are common yet misunderstood, like the treatment and diagnosis of endometriosis. The group also advocates for access to life altering medication for their patients, support in managing chronic pain, and even more operating room time to help patients from across the province.
“Obstetrics and gynecological health is an area that has historically been underserved, worldwide.” says Dr. Nitsch. “We are fortunate to have the tools to perform these surgeries for women right here in our region, and we are on a mission to keep growing the program and help even more patients down the road.”
