Your surgery

At Kingston Health Sciences Centre (KHSC), we promise to work with you to make your journey through the surgical program as comfortable and simple as possible. As a starting point, there are two main ways to be admitted for surgery. You can have a planned elective surgery or an emergency surgery.

Emergency Surgery

After you arrive at our emergency department, our surgical teams will arrange your admission to KHSC's Kingston General Hospital site and for your inpatient recovery afterwards. As this type of surgery is usually unexpected, we understand this type of surgery can be stressful, so we will do all we can to assist you and your family through this experience.

Elective Surgery

If you have a scheduled, elective surgery, you will be admitted to the hospital through the Same Day Admission Centre on Connell 2. In some cases, we'll ask you to come to the hospital the night before your surgery, but for most surgeries you will be asked to arrive only a few hours in advance. Your surgeon's office will call you to let you know the date and time of your surgery. At the same time your surgeon will also inform you if it is necessary for you to stay in hospital or whether you will be able to go home on the same day. By the time you arrive for your surgery, you will already have been through the pre-admission process at KHSC's Hotel Dieu Hospital site and you will have met with your nurse.
