The Lakeside Clinic (formerly Women’s Clinic) at the KGH site, provides you with access to safe, discreet and respectful options to terminate an unplanned and unwanted pregnancy.
To be seen in the clinic you may be referred by a primary health-care provider (family doctor, nurse practitioner, public health nurse) after an ultrasound is completed to determine how many weeks you have been pregnant. If you do not have a primary health-care provider, or if you have been unable to book a timely appointment with your primary health-care provider, you can contact the Lakeside Clinic directly at 613-548-2423 to book an appointment. The receptionist will also work to arrange an ultrasound on your behalf once you have reached five and a half weeks of pregnancy based on your last menstrual period.

Please note, if the receptionist is unavailable to take your call, you can leave a message and we will connect with you as soon as possible. For privacy reasons, when we call we will not leave a message on your phone unless you specifically request for us to do so. After two business days, if your call has not been returned, please call the Lakeside Clinic again to schedule your appointment.
The clinic is located on the first floor of the Dietary wing at the Kingston General site. If you plan to enter the KGH site through the main entrance off of Stuart Street, please click here for a map that will help you find the Dietary wing. All services in the clinic are covered by the Ontario Health Insurance Plan, so there is no cost for you to be seen in the clinic.
Options
The Lakeside Clinic offers two procedures that can be used depending on how far you are into your pregnancy. They are:
- Medical termination - if you are less than nine weeks pregnant, you may opt for a medical termination. This procedure requires two appointments one week apart. The first appointment you will be given medication at the clinic and they will also send you home with a second medication along with instructions for when you take it. You will then return to the clinic one week later for follow up. You must meet certain medical requirements to be a candidate for the medical termination.
- Surgical termination - if you are between seven and 12 weeks pregnant, you will be offered a surgical procedure known as a vacuum D&C. This procedure is completed in the clinic and you will need to stay in the hospital for most of the day. You'll register for the procedure in the morning and will likely be ready to go home sometime between three and four o'clock in the afternoon. You should feel well enough to return to work or school the day after the procedure.

Extra support available to you
Making a decision to terminate a pregnancy can be a very difficult one and each situation is different. The decision to have an abortion (or not) is extremely personal. It is important for you to have reliable and accurate information, so you can make the choice that is right for you. When your appointment has been booked in the clinic, you'll be offered the opportunity to meet with a social worker who can provide you with counselling. You don't have to meet with the social worker, but the option is available to you if you would like to talk to someone about your feelings and your decision.
On the day of your appointment you will also be offered the opportunity to learn more about different birth control options including the morning after pill. We can also provide you with a prescription for your method of choice. If you are interested, the doctor in the clinic can also insert an intrauterine device (IUD) immediately after your procedure or during a follow-up visit to help prevent future pregnancies.
