Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is a non-invasive test that doctors use to diagnose and treat medical conditions. KGH provides complex MRI scans for both inpatients and outpatients.

KGH currently has a scanner that runs 7 days per-week and we are in the process of adding a second MRI machine in the near future. An MRI machine uses a powerful magnet to create detailed pictures of organs, soft tissues, bones and other structures inside the body. When the MRI machine is turned on, you'll notice that it is quite noisy. That noise is the sound of electrical currents in the wires of the magnet. While it can be loud, it won't hurt and you won't be able to feel the magnetic field. The MRI machine is built to scan specific areas of the body and each area takes about 30-60 minutes to scan.

Because the machine is a big magnet, you'll be asked to change into a hospital gown and remove all jewelry and any other types of metal before you enter the room. You'll be asked to stay perfectly still during the exam so that we can get a clear image. Even something simple like a cough can cause the image to be distorted. Please review our MRI screening form here. This will help you to prepare for your MRI.

An MRI examination can be done on any of the following areas inside your body:

  • Head, brain, pituitary gland
  • Neck
  • Spine
  • Chest
  • Abdomen - liver, kidneys, pancreas, spleen, stomach and bowels
  • Upper limb body parts - shoulders, elbows, wrists, hands
  • Lower limb body parts - hips, knees, feet and ankles
  • Breasts
  • Heart
  • Veins and arteries
