Due to the high volume of applications we have received, and the limited number of volunteer positions, we are not currently accepting applications to volunteer at this time. Please check back in April 2023. Thank you.
To become a volunteer at the Kingston General Hospital or Hotel Dieu Hospital site of Kingston Health Sciences Centre, you must complete the six-step application process listed below. Through this process, we will identify if there is a volunteer role available that is a good match for your interests, skills, and availability. Once the application process is complete, we will arrange program-specific training to help facilitate a smooth transition into your volunteer role.
Please note, the minimum age to volunteer at the Hotel Dieu Hospital and Kingston General Hospital sites of KHSC is 16 years old.
1) Application Form
If you are over 16 years of age please click here to complete our online application form. (The form will be live again when we resume accepting applications for volunteer positions).
Or, you can click here to contact Volunteer Services (613-548-2359 #1) if you prefer to have an application form mailed to you. (Once we resume accepting applications for volunteer positions).
2) References
On the application form, you will provide the names of two references along with their contact information. Volunteer Services will contact your references directly by email (or by phone if no email is available) with the link to our online reference form. Please inform your references to watch for this email from Volunteer@Kingstonhsc.ca as it may arrive in their junk email.
3) Information Session/Interview
Once you have submitted your application form and your references have been received, the Intake Specialist will be in touch to arrange an interview. At that time we will discuss the currently available roles, your interests, availability and answer any questions you might have.
4) Criminal Reference Check and the Vulnerable Sector Search
All KHSC employees and volunteers must complete a Criminal Reference Check (CRC) as well as a Vulnerable Sector Search (VSS). These can be obtained through the police service that serves the municipality you live in. If you are asked to provide proof that we require a CRC/VSS as part of our selection process, click here to request a personalized letter. If you have completed a CRC/VSS within three months of your application submission, you can submit a copy of that report to Volunteer Services.
If completing this step through Kingston Police, only, applicants have the option to apply online for their Criminal Reference Check and Vulnerable Sector Search here: https://www.kingstonpolice.ca/en/services-and-reporting/background-check... Once you receive your online CRC/VSS, you will need to log into the Kingston Police portal to share it with "Kingston Health Sciences Centre - Volunteer." You also have the option of attending the Kingston Police Station during regular hours (Monday to Friday, 8:00 am - 6:00 pm) and applying for the CRC/VSS in person, which will be completed while you wait. If you have any questions about this process, please contact Volunteer Services.
The cost of a CRC/VSS is determined by your local police service. Kingston Health Sciences Centre can reimburse you for this expense after you complete three months of consistent service. To be reimbursed please keep your original receipt. Please note: If there are financial barriers that prevent you from waiting three months for reimbursement, please contact Volunteer Services. We do not want a financial barrier to prevent someone from volunteering at KHSC.
5) Health Screening
Following your interview with the Intake Specialist, and prior to confirmation of a volunteer role and shift, you must submit the results of a negative two-step tuberculosis (TB) test and provide proof of immunizations, including 2 doses of COVID-19 vaccination.
The Intake Specialist will provide you with our health screening form for your primary health care provider to complete. Click here if you would like to review the form in advance.
A request for reimbursement of the costs associated with having this form completed can be submitted after three months of consistent volunteer service. To be reimbursed please keep your original receipt. Please note: If there are financial barriers that prevent you from waiting three months for reimbursement, please contact Volunteer Services. We do not want a financial barrier to prevent someone from volunteering at KHSC.
6) Orientation
(approximately 3½ hours)
Prior to a volunteer role and shift being assigned, you must complete the hospital orientation modules. Through these e-modules you will learn about corporate and departmental policies and procedures, including information about safety and security, infection control, confidentiality and privacy. The e-modules can be completed at any point throughout the intake process at your convenience. Once you have completed the modules, Volunteer Services will be notified.
